*Guest/Work* is a music and dance theater piece that explores the concepts of “guest” and “work” as social, physical, and emotional categories. The performers’ parents, Linda Pilar Brodhag and Ljubisa Kimpanov, came to Germany in the 1960s from Spain and the former Yugoslavia as so-called guest workers. Sixty years later, their children take the stage and encounter their parents’ stories as something that lives on within them—in their breath, in their gestures, in the rhythm of work and rest, in melodies, jokes, and fears. The starting point is a living room that, over the course of the evening, transforms into a hybrid stage space—a cross between a talk show, a dance hall, and a place of remembrance. Through video and audio, parents and other migrant workers share their stories. Reality and exaggeration overlap. An unstable space emerges in which a multitude of voices, overwhelming demands, and humor become part of the exploration of belonging and work in all their forms.
