He was one of the most famous composers of the 18th century. His compositions enjoyed great popularity throughout Europe and his reputation as a virtuoso preceded him across the globe.
No, we're not talking about Johann Sebastian Bach, but Antonio Vivaldi. "Il prete rosso", the "Red Priest" from Venice, as he was known due to his hair color, was one of the most important composers of the Baroque era. Through a publisher in Amsterdam, his works were distributed all over the continent, even as far as East Germany. There, Johann Sebastian Bach studied Vivaldi's compositions very closely and was inspired by the youthful freshness of the concerti. Under the direction of Gottfried von der Goltz, the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra juxtaposes Vivaldi's virtuoso, colorful concerti with two Brandenburg Concertos and an orchestral suite by Bach, thus demonstrating the close connection between the two composers.
It becomes clear how differently the two composers approached the concerto genre. On the one hand Vivaldi, who impresses with his immense clarity, periodicism and richness of color, on the other hand Bach, for whom the thematic treatment and the interweaving of the voices are in the foreground. However, the two composers are not antipodes, but representatives of two different trends that prevailed in musical Europe at the time.
