Julius Eastman: Symphony No. 2 THE FAITHFUL FRIEND: THE LOVER FRIEND'S LOVE FOR THE BELOVED (German premiere) Ludwig van Beethoven: Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 4 in G major op. 58 Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart: Symphony No. 40 in G minor K. 550 Isata Kanneh-Mason is the eldest of seven siblings who have been described as "Britain's most talented family". She has embarked on a great solo career in recent years and is expanding her repertoire with care and flair. Her recordings of works by Clara Schumann have received international acclaim. With us, she plays Ludwig van Beethoven's brightest piano concerto in G major, one of the first concertos ever to begin with a cadenza for the solo instrument. From the very beginning, Beethoven takes us into a magical world, leading us through the pastoral mood of the first movement, the speeches and rebuttals of the middle movement associated with the myth of Orpheus and into the relaxed celebratory mood of the finale. If this concerto is perhaps the most romantic of the classical era, Mozart's K. 550 in G minor is its symphonic counterpart. Especially in the dark version of the symphony with clarinets, revised by Mozart himself, with which our concert season ends. In no other work by Mozart are light and shadow, hope and despair so close together, is sorrow so bright and hope so full of tears. Julius Eastman's Symphony No. 2, THE FAITHFUL FRIEND: THE LOVER FRIEND'S LOVE FOR THE BELOVED, which revolves around questions of the possibility of love and the fall into catastrophe, takes us a long way back to the beginning of the season and Hector Berlioz's fantastic biography of the artist.
