What is a poetry slam?

A poetry slam is a modern poetry competition in which poets compete against each other with self-written texts and a fixed time limit. The audience decides which poet leaves the stage as the winner at the end of the slam.

There are virtually no limits to the variety of texts - while some are dedicated to poetry, others chat anecdotally about their everyday life in a relaxed prose style, others are political with clear statements and rampant wordplay is just as common as philosophical excursions that like to challenge the audience.

This boundlessness is probably one of the guarantees for the success of this event format, which came to Germany from America at the end of the 1980s and is now a permanent fixture in many venues.

The entertainment factor lives from the versatility of the poets and their texts, and the opportunity to help shape the evening as a jury ensures an entertaining and popular event format.
