Music and history, in other words

History in Europe is usually a narrative of phases of political and cultural power. These are repeatedly shaken up by conflicts and uprisings - until everything is resolved and the distribution of power is rearranged. There seems to be room for other kinds of historiography only on the margins. Or where is the communal, the sensual or the feminine history told instead? Actually, history is supposed to form the collective memory of a society. For this purpose, important artifacts - texts, images, objects, etc. - are collected and the events of the past are given meaning. In a sense, historians are curators of the past. As such, they also have a position of power: they decide what is stored and worth remembering, and what is forgotten. And often they serve - willingly or casually - the narrative of those in power. The project "Other Histories" searches for other ways of writing history. Three composers from different backgrounds and musical locations deal individually with concepts and practices of history.
