Christa Mayer studied singing at the Bayerische Singakademie and the HMT Munich. In 2000 she won prizes at the Richard Strauss Society in Munich, the International Robert Schumann Competition in Zwickau and the ARD Competition in Munich. Christa Mayer has been a member of the Semperoper Dresden ensemble since 2001. There she sings major roles in her repertoire such as Erda, Fricka and Waltraute in Wagner's Ring, Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde, Didone in Les Troyens, Amneris in Aida, the Handel roles of Orlando, Bradamante and Cornelia, Quickly in Falstaff, Gaea in Daphne and Herodias in Salome. In 2005, she was awarded the Christel Goltz Prize by the Semperoper Foundation.
Guest appearances have taken the singer to major opera houses in Europe and Asia such as the Munich State Opera, La Venice in Venice, the Liceu in Barcelona, the Vienna State Opera, the Zurich Opera House and the NNT Tokyo. Following her Bayreuth Festival debut in 2008 as Erda and Waltraute under the baton of Christian Thielemann, she is a regular guest on the green hill in roles such as Fricka, Waltraute, Magdalene and Brangäne. The singer has worked closely with the Salzburg Easter Festival since 2014. For Christa Mayer, concerts and lieder singing form an important counterbalance to her stage work. In addition to recitals with Helmut Deutsch at the piano, she has performed with leading orchestras in London, Milan, Amsterdam, Paris, Vienna, Athens, Lisbon, Berlin,
Dallas, Abu Dhabi and Seoul as well as at the Rheingau and Schleswig-Holstein Music Festivals, the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg and the Lucerne Festival. On the concert platform, the artist works with conductors such as Riccardo Chailly, Semyon Bychkov, Marek Janowski, Jonathan Nott, Sir Colin Davis, Herbert Blomstedt, Simone Young, Zubin Mehta and Christian Thielemann. In 2020, Christa Mayer was awarded the honorary title of Kammersängerin in Dresden; in the same year, she was awarded the Bavarian Culture Prize.
