Lecture & Discussion: Sophia Fritz - The Man, the Victim

Sophia Fritz offers an empathetic critique of patriarchal masculinity and opens up the possibility of replacing it with something new and more liberating.

Following her bestseller *Toxic Femininity*, Sophia Fritz offers an empathetic critique of masculinity—one that seeks to understand rather than accuse.

Men as victims? No—and yes. It is still primarily men who wield power, shape social structures, and acquire and accumulate wealth. Yet behind this dominance lies a contradictory reality: men who withdraw, remain silent, or stay emotionally unreachable—in relationships, within families, and toward themselves. Drawing on the loss of her brother, Sophia Fritz embarks on a poignant search for clues and sheds light on cultural and emotional mechanisms.

She asks how masculinity is formed today and why it is so often associated with pain—for men themselves and for those around them. With *Der Mann, das Opfer* (*The Man, the Victim*), she presents a thoughtful and empathetic analysis of patriarchal masculinity—while simultaneously opening up the possibility of a freer, more vulnerable understanding of what it means to be a man today.

Sophia Fritz studied screenwriting and dramaturgy at the Film Academy in Munich and trained as a youth guide for memorial sites, a hospice end-of-life caregiver, and a tantric massage therapist. She writes screenplays, newspaper articles, novels, essays, and nonfiction books. Her debut novel, *Steine schmeißen*, was published in 2021. Her work as an author has been supported by numerous grants. In 2024, her bestselling nonfiction book *Toxische Weiblichkeit* was published.
