Songs sung while working have been part of music ever since people began to toil. Various approaches to this theme will be featured in the Freiburg Chamber Choir’s fall concert.
In his work “Work Cries,” whose Freiburg premiere will serve as the concert’s eponymous focal point, the young Chinese composer Leyou Wang depicts wordless, self-motivating groups of people singing—sometimes loudly, sometimes softly, sometimes as a fugue, sometimes as a ‘song’—spur one another on to peak performance. Hanns Eisler’s “Four Pieces for Mixed Choir, Op. 13” shed light on society and the working class in the context of the interwar period, while the works by Rzewski and Grimm focus on the primal forces of the Industrial Revolution. Workers’ songs from around the world will also be featured, rounding out this highly compelling concert program.
