Funeral customs are changing and becoming increasingly personalized. More and more people are thinking early on about what the end of their lives and their own funerals should look like. One of the key elements of a funeral is the coffin, in which the deceased is once again present among their loved ones and friends and remains connected to them. This workshop offers the opportunity to build your own coffin for your future funeral and to customize it to your liking. First, you’ll construct the basic coffin frame, which you can then design and decorate according to your own individual preferences. At the same time, the boards needed to build the coffin are prepared in such a way that they can also be used to create a piece of furniture of your choice—one that you can use in your own home for many years to come (10 possible designs, including: a stereo stand, bookshelf, dresser, table, etc.). In addition to building the coffin, this workshop also teaches participants some skills in using a carpenter’s tools and machines.
Schedule:
Day 1: 12:00 p.m.–5:00 p.m.: Building the coffin frame from pre-cut pieces.
Day 2: 9 a.m.–6 p.m.: From coffin to furniture. Working on the parts to create your own functional piece of furniture.
Day 3: 9 a.m.–1 p.m.: Surface treatment and finishing touches. Creating instructions for future generations on how to convert the piece of furniture back into a coffin.
