One of the most notable shifts in American television in the 21st century is the rise of narratively complex serial programs as a dominant and prestigious mode of storytelling, a phenomenon documented by Jason Mittell’s 2015 book Complex TV. Now a decade later, Mittell uses the case study of the anthology miniseries Fargo to consider what has remained consistent in television storytelling and what has changed, particularly after the rise of streaming platforms and shifts in the structure of many television series.

Jason Mittell is Professor of Film & Media Culture at Middlebury College (USA). His books include Complex Television: The Poetics of Contemporary Television Storytelling (2015), Narrative Theory and Adaptation (2017), The Chemistry of Character in "Breaking Bad": A Videographic Book (2024), and co-editor of How to Watch Television (with Ethan Thompson; 2013, revised 2020).
