There are many things that have to do with our everyday lives. These are sensations and experiences that seem to be recognized but are not - things that are sometimes vague or fade from memory. What does it mean for our lives if we try to perceive them from a different perspective?
Peco Kawashima:
"I was born and raised in Kyoto Japan. After studying architecture in Japan and wood sculpture in Germany, I studied sculpture at the State Academy of Fine Arts in Karlsruhe. From May to October 2023, I received a scholarship from the state of Baden-Württemberg at the Cité internationale des arts.
When I arrived in Paris, the studio was unused - it was simply an empty space. There was no sign of my creative work yet, and it felt like I was starting from scratch. Still, I carried the memories of my past within me. My past experiences have awakened many emotions in me that are not easy to put into numbers as they vary from person to person.
During my stay, I had the opportunity to meet artists from different countries. In a constantly changing world, I was able to question my own values and reflect on my position. The exchange between other people's everyday lives and my own gave me the chance to change my perspective. I hope that the exhibition offers visitors the opportunity to make a connection between their everyday life and mine."
This exhibition is part of the "Retour de Paris" exhibition series, which gives young artists from Baden-Württemberg the opportunity to show their new work after their scholarship at the Cité internationale des arts in the Marais in Paris. The program is funded by the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts.
