Bauer has been documenting the public work and private life of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate for over three decades. The Dalai Lama allowed the Swiss photographer to work in his immediate surroundings and to be present even when the doors were closed to others. The result is a unique, intimate portrait of an extraordinary personality that is deeply moving and at the same time provides insights into the history of Tibet, Tibetan Buddhism and the political challenges of exile.
