Master of subtle nuances - When it's at its best, should you leave? Oh no, you should stay! Edward Gardner therefore recently extended his time as chief conductor of the much-praised London Philharmonic Orchestra until at least 2028. In the current season, they are paying tribute to the historical connection between the LPO and Edward Elgar's works. As a guest conductor with the orchestra back in 2016, Gardner proved himself to be a "very fine Elgarian" (bachtrack.com), and the praise only increased. In 2023, the Guardian raved that Gardner's fresh interpretation of Elgar's First Symphony made tangible how the work stands with both feet in the 19th century while always looking forward: "Gardner understands this duality, and the LPO responded with the dedication that is characteristic of their partnership."

The violin concerto by the enthusiastic English traveler Mendelssohn brings the traditional London orchestra together with Arabella Steinbacher, one of the outstanding interpreters of the work. Here, the sympathetic star violinist can easily demonstrate her mastery of subtle nuances, which had already enraptured the specialist press with Steinbacher's Mendelssohn recording released in 2015. The re-release of the 2024 recording proves how exemplary her approach is: "Steinbacher's iridescent violin tone, as if drawn with a silver pencil, continues to enchant, as does her musicianship, which is characterized by deep feeling and sensitivity" (Concerti). But as Arabella Steinbacher herself admits, even the most successful recording cannot replace "that tingling sensation on stage and the energy from the audience". And so Mendelssohn's unique violin concerto remains a faithful companion on stage. Because it's still so beautiful.
