Strong voices - In March 2023, the Konzerthaus (concert hall) was enchanted by the piano recital of one of the most promising young pianists ever: Alexandra Dovgan's artistic maturity is so overwhelming that even the legendary monolith Grigory Sokolov certified years ago that he could hear the "interpretation of an adult individual, a fully formed personality" in her truthful and concentrated playing. Dovgan has a partnership with the Basel Chamber Orchestra, which is set to reach new heights with Delyana Lazarova. The conductor has a preference for unfamiliar repertoire. Even though international orchestras are now lining up, she remains particularly attached to Switzerland as the country where she studied. Together, they shed light on Clara Schumann, who was frenetically celebrated as a young pianist, and the highly romantic piano concerto she composed in her teenage years.
It is juxtaposed with her husband's Concerto in A minor, which the star pianist premiered in the 1840s. In between, one of the almost forgotten voices of the time is given a hearing: the internationally renowned Emilie Mayer, whose eight symphonies are just a selection of her rich oeuvre. The fact that the tempestuous Symphony in B minor was even published in a piano arrangement speaks to the importance of the work - and is a stroke of luck, as this is the only way the work could be reconstructed today despite the lost score. More than 40 years after the ensemble was founded, the Basel Chamber Orchestra remains true to its passion: to play music of its own choosing and to infect audiences with the joy of discovery and fresh perspectives.
