Sensational flair - In the Freiburg concert calendar, the Basel Chamber Orchestra has become a guarantee for top-class concert experiences: the orchestra has been a regular guest at Albert since 2013 and combines a flair for outstanding playing partners with a knack for clever program constellations. The rousing ensemble sound alone would be an unbeatable argument: it is clear that the artistic personalities here add up to more than the sum of their instruments, and the Münchner Merkur recently described it as a "sensation" how "everyone throws themselves into the performance with enthusiasm as if their lives depended on it".

At this year's guest performance by the Basel neighbors, two works written almost simultaneously will frame the evening: the wind serenade by the teenager Richard Strauss and the sun-drenched 3rd Symphony by Johannes Brahms. Clara Schumann was one of the first admirers of this composition: "What a work, what poetry, the most harmonious mood throughout, all movements as if cast from a single mold, a heartbeat, every movement a jewel!"

As a soloist, we can look forward to the Albert debut of Yulianna Avdeeva, internationally renowned not least for her victory at the Warsaw Chopin Competition in 2010, the first woman to do so since Martha Argerich in 1965. With the "artist who can really make the piano sing" (Gramophone), Beethoven's 3rd Piano Concerto is in wise, knowledgeable hands. Although sketches for this work date back to 1796, at the premiere in 1803 the piano part in the hastily completed sheet music still consisted of "incomprehensible hieroglyphics" which only the composer playing the work was able to interpret. The audience then experienced the novelty of a piano concerto of symphonic proportions - with an unfathomably gentle second movement that gave the pianoforte a completely new feel and a finale that combined almost naïve simplicity with the intricate art of fugue.
