Joseph Haydn is known above all as a humorous, surprising composer of symphonies and string quartets. He was active in all musical genres and left behind an extensive oeuvre. This includes two (proven) piano concertos, which bear comparison with their sister compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and in which Haydn's genius is just as omnipresent as in his other compositions.

This subscription concert features the Piano Concerto in D major, performed by Sebastian Wienand on the fortepiano. He has been a permanent member of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra since 2023 and impressively proves with his solo part that the musicians of the FBO are not only excellent ensemble musicians, but are also convincing soloists at an international level.

In addition to three works by Haydn, the program includes Mozart's Serenata notturna KV 239, which he composed in January 1776 for the Salzburg Carnival. Here, Mozart proves that he certainly shared Haydn's sense of musical humor. The serenade begins surprisingly with a march, for which the soloists presumably entered the ballroom, where the tutti players were already waiting for them. The final rondeau is also unusual, becoming faster and faster and concluding the work with curious twists and turns.
