Anton Bruckner's Mass No. 3 in F minor, also known as the "Great Mass", is an outstanding work of sacred music from the 19th century. The mass will be conducted by the Spanish conductor Pablo Heras-Casado.

When Anton Bruckner wrote his Mass in F minor, he was going through difficult months. In the spring of 1867, private and professional defeats had driven him to the brink of madness, according to his own account. The Linz cathedral organist suffered a nervous crisis from which he had to recover in a sanatorium. When he was able to resume his work in August of the same year, he composed as if in a frenzy. Delighted by his regained creative power, he succeeded in a stroke of genius: a mass of symphonic proportions and shattering expressiveness, which was to go down in music history as his "Great". For the SWR Vokalensemble, the performance of this last mass setting by Bruckner is a reunion with conductor Pablo Heras-Casado, the WDR Rundfunkchor Köln and the SWR Symphonieorchester this season.
