lake park "Seepark"
Along with the municipal park, the Seepark is one of the most popular green spaces within Freiburg's city limits, offering recreational activities for all ages, with its swimming lake, restaurants, a swimming pool, playgrounds and miniature golf.
The site of the Seepark was used for agriculture before the turn of the century. However, the gravel soil was ill-suited for growing grain and so, in the 1920s, a gravel company, Flückiger, moved to this location to mine sand and gravel. Gravel mining was shut down in the 1970s, with only the Flückigersee lake now a reminder of this past.
In 1986, the entire site was completely converted to host the State Horticultural Show, and in 1990, a Japanese garden with a waterfall and stream was created on an area of 3,600 square meters together with Freiburg's twin city Matsuyama. Many areas of the park, featuring a small temple, forester's house, viewing tower and Eco Station, remain as they were built back then.
