Forests of the world: Kenya

The East African country stretches on both sides of the equator from Uganda to the Indian Ocean. The 55 million inhabitants belong to 40 different ethnic groups with more than 50 languages and dialects.
Although Kenya has a large number of national parks and protected areas, the proportion of forest has been reduced to just 4 percent of the country's surface area due to slash-and-burn and deforestation. Agriculture can only be practiced on 10 percent of the land, but is still the main source of livelihood for the people. Droughts and floods are increasingly threatening the food resources of the rapidly growing population.
Nevertheless, there are promising reforestation projects. These include the "Green Belt Movement" founded in 1977 by the Kenyan Wangari Maathai and the "Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration Project" developed largely by Tony Rinaudo. These and other agroforestry and permaculture projects aim to empower the population to use natural resources sustainably and strengthen their independence.
