The martial art of Chinese shadow boxing: The style of Master Ma from Argentina. Lecture by the speaker Mönke Degkwitz
The health-promoting effect of Taijiquan (Tai Chi/ Taiji) is known worldwide today. It is beneficial for body and mind, the life energies are strengthened and come into a harmonious flow. But is it also an effective martial art? Master Ma Cunkun (1908 -1993) and his probably best-known Argentinian student Fernando Chedel have certainly made a name for themselves as outstanding martial artists. Like other Taiji styles, the Ma style emphasizes softness and harmony, but at the same time always remains close to its application as a martial art. Master Ma Cunkun was an academic, provincial governor, martial artist and general. He emigrated from mainland China to Taiwan in 1947 and moved to Argentina via the USA in 1971.
Mönke Degkwitz studied sinology in Freiburg from 2002-2004. He then devoted more time to the guitar and studied music until 2009, specializing in jazz guitar, also in Freiburg. As the son of a Taiwanese mother, however, he continued to be interested in Chinese culture, especially Taijiquan, which he now teaches alongside his work as a guitar teacher.
