From roller technology to 3D printing - additive processes for ceramic materials

Book tickets

The so-called roll or bead technique is one of the oldest construction techniques for vessels in the long ceramic tradition. Preformed rolls, usually made of clay (earthenware or stoneware), are placed on top of each other and then smeared together to create a stable material structure. In more detail, this is an additive and layered construction process whose logic is reflected in a completely different, digitally-supported process: In the ceramic 3d printing process, a fine, soft strand of material is pressed out of the machine's print head. At the same time, the print head moves upwards layer by layer along the digitally generated geometry, gradually building up the object from the bottom up.

The workshop explores the creative potential of these two techniques and searches for their connections: On the one hand, we will experiment with different roll and ribbon shapes (round, angular, twisted) in manual construction, with the effect of different layer thicknesses and non-horizontal layer arrangements as well as with geometric variations of the elements to be added. Earthenware and stoneware will be used for the manual techniques.
On the other hand, the workshop will provide a practical introduction to the ceramic 3D printing process. It will provide a sound insight into the functionality and handling as well as the steps required to control the machine. A small digital tool will be available for the workshop, with which a variety of shapes and surfaces can be created and then printed. Neither basic knowledge of 3D modeling nor a laptop are required.
In addition to experimenting with the parametric digital tool, you can also bring your own digital designs. A soft porcelain will be used for the ceramic 3d printing.

Course times: Fri. 2-6pm, Sat. 10am-5pm, Sun. 10am-4pm
