Series of events from October 16 to November 19: National Socialism Documentation Center commemorates the end of the war and the destruction of the city of Freiburg in November 1944

On Wednesday, October 16, a lecture will take place at 7 p.m. in the Chamber Music Hall of the College of Music (main building), Mendelssohn-Bartholdy-Platz 1. Entitled "End of the war: Freiburg, Germany and Europe 1944/45", historian Ulrich Herbert will look at locations and events that shaped not only individual memories and images of history, but also the European and universal experience of war. As part of the series "Talks on current productions" of the Studium Generale of the University campus Freiburg, Werner Frick, director of the Studium Generale, Frank Markowitsch, artistic director of the Bach Choir, conductor Joss Reinicke and historian Heinrich Schwendemann will talk about Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem" on Tuesday, October 22, at 8:15 pm. The panel discussion will take place in KG I, lecture hall 1015, Platz der Universität 3 and is free of charge.

On Sunday, November 10, at 7 p.m., the performance of Benjamin Britten's "War Requiem" will take place in the Konzerthaus (concert hall) under the artistic direction of Frank Markowitsch. Tickets for the concert by the Bach Choir with the Bach Orchestra, the Freiburg Cathedral Boys' Choir and the choir and orchestra of the College of Music are available for 14 to 49 euros at freiburger-bachchor.reservix.de/events. The Requiem was first performed in 1962 at the celebration of the rebuilding of Coventry Cathedral, which was destroyed by German bombs in 1940. Britten created an anti-war piece with the requiem.

The series of events concludes on Tuesday, November 19, at 4 p.m. with a workshop by the Doku-Zentrum Nationalsozialismus. "The end of the war and images of history" is aimed at teachers. Participants will deal with the multi-perspective mediation of the end of the war in Freiburg. The focus is on selecting site-specific content, exchanging experiences and reflecting on the challenges of the topic. Registration is possible until Tuesday, November 12, at dzns@freiburg.de. Participation is free, the venue will be communicated after registration.
