About seeing

What is seeing? How do we see and what do we see? Why do we perceive some things while overlooking others? In his photographic images, Lidong Zhao (*1986 in Jiangsu, China) reflects on how language shapes perception and thus our way of seeing. The experience of an "in-between" plays an important role in his artistic work: moving between languages, ideas and cultural concepts also means a constant movement of perception, which the artist makes productive in his photographic vision. Zhao, who studied painting in Nanjing and artistic photography at the Folkwang University of the Arts in Essen, lives and works in and near University campus Freiburg.

The exhibition shows new photographic works by the artist that have been created over the past two years.
