Separation or cooperation between church and state?

How should the relationship between church and state be structured in an increasingly pluralistic society? Although the Basic Law provides for their separation, close cooperation on a constitutional basis characterizes everyday life in many places. In view of changing religious and ideological realities, there is increasing discussion as to whether German constitutional law on religion needs to be fundamentally changed.

The third event in the series "Baden Dialogue - Church and State in Europe" on Thursday, July 10 from 10.00 am to 4.30 pm at the Catholic Academy in Freiburg, Wintererstrasse 1, is dedicated to these questions.

Central impulses will be given: The controversial Catholic canon lawyer Prof. Dr. Thomas Schüller, Institute for Canon Law, University of Münster, and the former Protestant Bishop and Chairman of the Council of the Protestant Church, Prof. Dr. Heinrich Bedford-Strohm, Chairman of the World Council of Churches. Both will shed light on the relationship between the state and churches or religions and the question of what role the churches can and should play in society in the future. Exchange forums and a panel discussion will enable an in-depth debate with numerous experts from the church, politics and academia.

The impulses and the concluding panel discussion will be broadcast via livestream.
