Translucency and lightness - porcelain turning workshop
Carolin Wachter
Friday, 09/05/2025 / 04:00 PM / Vorderhaus (cultural center)
In this workshop, we will focus on translucency. In the world of ceramics, this property is reserved for porcelain. A thinly twisted porcelain vessel wall makes its materiality appear alive and translucent through the light. The surroundings and the contents of the vessel immediately change the impression of the translucent vessel. Tea in a light, thin porcelain bowl allows its color to appear differently in the bowl and on the outer wall each time and offers an incentive to observe this interplay in the light of the "here and now".
In the 3-day workshop we will try our hand at turning thin-walled porcelain vessels on plaster and wooden boards and turn thick-walled vessels in order to cut, perforate, emboss and shellac them to obtain different wall thicknesses and translucencies.
In the process, we will explore many of the inherent properties of porcelain and learn which techniques are best to use at what time.
This workshop is aimed at anyone who wants to spend time with porcelain on the wheel and wants to explore the possibilities and difficulties of this material. Experience on the wheel is desirable.
