Tourist in your own city
Sunday, 18/05/2025 / 10:00 AM - 05:00 PM / Old Town Freiburg
Why exactly do so many tourists come to Freiburg? How do they see the city? To find out, the "Tourist in your own city" experience day has been running for twenty years.
From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., guided tours of the city, theaters and hotels, dance classes, walking and cycling tours are on offer. This year's theme for the day is "Marie Antoinette and Fribourg": the French queen was ceremoniously welcomed to the city in May 1770 during her bridal journey.
In addition to classic and themed city tours, there are also drama and wine tours and a tour of the Europapark stadium. The municipal theater, the historical merchants' hall, the archiepiscopal ordinariate, the old town hall and the Dorint and Colombi hotels offer a look behind the scenes. The "Schaffnertour" of the Schauinslandbahn and the ascent and descent with the Schlossbergbahn (castle hill funicular) take you up high. At the Alte Wache, the House of Baden Wines, the Staatsweingut Freiburg and the Winzerhaus Sankt Georg, you can track down the fruit that has made the region famous beyond its borders. For exercise enthusiasts, there are salsa and bachata classes or a bike tour to Heitersheim and back.
In addition to a wheel of fortune in the tourist information center, there will be town rallies and a scavenger hunt through the old town throughout the day, where you can win other prizes such as vouchers for dinner, wellness days or dance classes, rather than a schnitzel. There are also monthly museum passes, tickets for the Schlossbergbahn (castle hill funicular) and other highlights to be won.
Also open on May 18 are the Uniseum (university museum) Freiburg (11 am to 5 pm) and the historical merchants' hall (1 pm to 3 pm). On the same day, Freiburg's museums invite you to International Museum Day (10 am to 5 pm), admission is free everywhere.
Free tickets (maximum of two per person) are available on May 18 half an hour before the start of each event at the Tourist Information Office on Rathausplatz. This is also the meeting point.
