Tosca

"With LA BOHÈME we wanted to reap tears, with TOSCA we want to shake up people's sense of justice and put a little strain on their nerves. So far we have been gentle, now we want to be cruel." This is what the composer Giacomo Puccini wrote about his TOSCA. High tension from the first to the last bar and note prevails in this unique political-psychological thriller: a painter, a famous singer and Rome's powerful chief of police drive each other passionately and uncompromisingly through a fatal thicket of love, jealousy, faith, betrayal, intrigue and murder. The very first three chords hold your breath for the next two hours: Puccini's ingenious musical dramaturgy is gripping and always surprising. But who are the three people behind this operatic thriller? What secret fate has so inextricably linked them? And is there a way out? Are the stars of utopia still shining? We look forward to the Freiburg debut of renowned young director Ulrike Schwab and her telling of Puccini's masterpiece.
