"Monstrous things are preparing to happen in Güllen!"

This summer, the student theater group Spieltrieb takes its audience to the run-down town of Güllen, whose inhabitants are tempted by an immoral offer.
Güllen's economically desolate situation is shown right at the beginning of the play: In a town where there are no jobs or prospects for the future, the only pleasure to be had is watching the express trains that have long since stopped stopping in the isolated little town. With the surprise visit of Claire Zachanassian, a worldly multimillionaire, rosier times seem to be on the horizon. But it soon transpires that the old lady is no stranger to Güllen and that the generous donation she has announced to the town and its inhabitants is linked to an immoral condition. Initially, there is broad agreement that the offer should be rejected, but Claire Zachanassian knows that time is on her side: "I'll wait..."

Dürrenmatt's probably best-known work raises questions about human corruptibility, justice and revenge, which are still topical in their grotesque transformation almost 70 years later: When in doubt, how serious are we about our own moral convictions? Can one injustice serve as justification for another? How seducible do our personal desires make us?
