As the third concert in the Musiklandschaften e.V. summer concert series, teachers and students from the guitar department of the Freiburg University of Music will perform in the baroque church of St. Gallus in Merzhausen. The audience in Merzhausen can look forward to an evening in which the versatile instrument guitar will reveal both its virtuoso-spectacular and poetic, intimate qualities. The guitar department in Freiburg is one of the oldest and most renowned at German music academies. In 1976, Anton Stingl was appointed one of the first guitar professors in Germany. He was followed in 1980 by Prof. Sonja Prunnbauer until her retirement in 2014, who, as an artist and teacher, shaped a great era of university education for guitar with international appeal. In 2018, Prof. Michael Hampel was appointed as her successor to the traditional Freiburg guitar professorship. Numerous well-known guitarists have emerged from the guitar classes of Prunnbauer and Hampel, including many current professors and university lecturers. Phileas Baun is one of these successful young guitarists. He studied with Prof. Hampel, among others, and now also teaches at the Freiburg University of Music. Michael Hampel and Phileas Baun present solo and duo works for guitar in the wonderful acoustics of the Merzhausen baroque church. Together with Dongyeob Lee, Lorenz Zimmermann, Jiaxin Huang, Luca Bauer and Ma Haopu, students from Germany, Korea and China, they will play chamber music for several guitars.
