Rutter Requiem - Concert on All Saints' Day

Book tickets

The Rutter Requiem and "Hear my prayer" - a concert for All Saints' Day
Cappella Nova Freiburg under the direction of Katharina Skala performs the Rutter Requiem in the "ensemble" version for organ and instrumental ensemble (harp, cello, winds, percussion). The performers are: Fabian Luchterhandt (organ), Doesjka van der Linden (harp) and Verena Seyboldt (soprano).

Sir John Milford Rutter, CBE (* 1945) is one of the best-known and most successful British composers, conductors and choirmasters of choral and church music of our time. The Requiem is dedicated to his father and is one of his most personal compositions. After its premiere on
October 13, 1985 in Dallas, Texas, the Requiem was performed over 500 times in the USA within six months.

For his Requiem, Rutter adopts the basic structure of a requiem with "Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine", "Kyrie", Sanctus and Benedictus, "Agnus Die" and "Lux aeterna" in Latin, but weaves in a very personal selection of texts from the "Book of Common Prayer", published in 1662, which are sung in English. Rutter hits the nerve of the times, both in terms of content and
musically. He likes to use elements of jazz, musical, entertainment and film music.

Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy's "Hear my prayer" (1844) will precede the Rutter Requiem in the All Saints' Day concert. It is known to German audiences as "Hör mein Bitten". Mendelssohn originally composed the four-part anthem for his English audience. The English version will be heard in the concert. In the time of Queen Victoria, who was a great admirer of Mendelssohn and often invited him to give private concerts, "Hear ma prayer" was one of Felix Mendellsohn-Bartholy's best-known sacred works.

Tickets (EUR 30, 25, 15) are available from Reservix, all known advance booking offices and at the box office. Every ticket sold supports the Palliativnetz Freiburg gGmbH with EUR 5.
