Radio opera is to opera what a radio play is to stage drama: the action should be made comprehensible purely acoustically. Bringing these radio operas to a staged performance holds great appeal. As part of the cooperation between the College of Music and Theater Freiburg, we are taking up this challenge: firstly, the "radio play with music" MORD by the Berlin composer and Schönberg student Walter Gronostay from 1929 will be performed. The almost quarter-hour radio piece is a typical example of experimentation with the radiophonic possibilities of music, which goes far beyond mere illustration. The Italian composer Nino Rota, on the other hand, is best known for his work as a film composer for numerous masterpieces by Federico Fellini and Francis Ford Coppola. As an opera composer, he also dealt with the genre of the "opera radiofonica". The comic-melancholy story I DUE TIMIDI/THE TWO SHOOTS of two young lovers who are unable to confess their love to each other, set in the bustling life of a Roman courtyard, draws more on the tonal Italian tradition in the spirit of Puccini, but mixes this with the modern sounds of jazz and the everyday noises of urban life.
