Robinson Khoury - Winner: Prix Django Reinhardt 2024
The French Prix Django Reinhardt (named after Django Reinhardt) has been awarded by the "Académie du Jazz" in Paris for the French jazz musician of the year since 1955. It is one of the most prestigious French jazz prizes.

"Sensational" was just one of the many enthusiastic reactions to trombonist Robinson Khoury's concert at the Sparks and Visions Festival in Regensburg in January 2025. The Frenchman with Lebanese roots brought his new trio M "YA to Germany for the first time - and received rapturous acclaim. Quite rightly so, the performance with percussionist Anissa Nehari and keyboardist and pianist Léo Jassef at the Theater am Bismarckplatz was a musical event the likes of which are rarely experienced.

With a homogeneous mixture of electronic and analog sounds, voices and percussive energy, the trio created an almost magical atmosphere. The spellbound audience was catapulted into unimagined worlds. At the same time, Khoury and his fellow musicians opened up insights into lyrically tender, dark and explosive emotional landscapes.

Phenomenal composer
With strong ties to the jazz tradition, the phenomenal trombonist and composer also uses Arabic modes and North African influences for the pieces on his third album, which was released in the middle of last year. In this way, he explores his own roots and combines them with contemporary forms in a highly virtuoso manner. The concert was also a visual event with an imaginative construction of the lush percussion instruments.

A spiral-cut cymbal hangs like a sculpture next to percussionist Annisa Nehari. She usually played with one hand on the cajon on which she sat, using sticks for an impressive calabash, cymbals and other percussion instruments with the other. Together, all three initially formed floating vocal chants that were somewhat reminiscent of early medieval church songs.
