Recovery from Crisis: Portraits from the Frontlines of the Opioid Epidemic in America
Wednesday, 21/06/2023 / 07:00 PM / Carl-Schurz-Haus
Exhibition opening with photographs by Joshua Meltzer, Rochester, NY
Photojournalist Joshua Meltzer's series of large format portraits, documentary photography and landscapes illustrate that one of the few things that unites Americans across geographic, economic, racial and class lines is the opioid addiction crisis. These images, made in the heart of the central and southern Appalachian Mountains in Virginia, West Virginia and North Carolina for two books by author Beth Macy, ["Dopesick" (2018) and "Raising Lazarus" (2022)] depict people on the front lines of this epidemic, including those who have struggled with addiction, their family members, care givers and those fighting the powers of the pharmaceutical companies which enflamed this crisis in the first place. In this work, Joshua hopes to show the presence of hope and justice amidst a growing crisis sweeping across American and around the world.
