Raphaela Gromes & Julian Riem

On a treasure hunt - The fact that Starnberg cellist Raphaela Gromes and Munich pianist Julian Riem are on the same wavelength was clear from the first bars of their performance together at the 2012 Richard Strauss Competition - just one of the competition wins for the "Rising Star" cellist with the irresistibly infectious enthusiasm. Since then, they have also embarked on adventurous paths through the repertoire together, as in the current program, which focuses on female composers from different eras of music history.

While Nadia Boulanger is recognized as the kingmaker of modern music and a personality like Lera Auerbach is at least as highly esteemed as a composer as she is as a virtuoso, Clara Wieck's father had every reason to fear that his brilliantly gifted daughter would sacrifice her talents to the ambitions of her admirer Schumann. Clara Schumann's friend Pauline Viardot-Garcia was also recognized as a benchmark opera singer - but who knows her extensive chamber music oeuvre?

Even at the turn of the century, there was still a lot of groundwork to be done for the trained composer and conductor Elisabeth Kuyper, who in the 1910s and 1920s was instrumental in founding the first orchestras predominantly composed of women. The guest performance by Gromes and Riem therefore offers a whole series of valuable discoveries, hand-picked from the catalog of 23 female composers from nine centuries that the cellist selected for the "Femmes" project, which was also released as a double album. And the press response is unanimous: "Femmes is an artistically first-class treasure chest. And a determined step forward for the music world!" (hr2-kultur)
