Quatuor Modigliani

Jean-Guihen Queyras | Violoncello Schubert pur Since its foundation about two decades ago, the Quatuor Modigliani has earned a place in the Olympus of string quartets, among other things through a color palette that is differentiated down to the finest nuances, appropriately enough, since the quartet is named after a highly individual painter. On the occasion of the 225th birthday of Franz Schubert, the four Frenchmen recently presented a highly praised recording of his complete string quartets. For, as the musicians explain, one simply plays the late works differently when one has penetrated the early quartets. The Quatuor Modigliani therefore takes its Freiburg audience on a journey from one of the less present works from teenage days to the mysteriously aborted quartet fragment from 1820 to the celebrated late work. None other than Jean-Guihen Queyras facilitates the distinctive scoring with two cellos for the string quintet with which Schubert crystallized the qualities of his chamber music in a single work just months before his death.
