Puccini left his hometown of Lucca with a big dream: to become an opera composer in the footsteps of the revered Richard Wagner. After some effort, he finally succeeded. His Mass is his most extensive work outside the genre of opera and was composed at the end of his school career at a musical grammar school. It already breathes the spirit of magnificent melodies and bold harmonic turns.
The mass was only performed once during Puccini's lifetime. Only since its rediscovery in 1952 has it enjoyed growing popularity, building on the success of his operas.
