Petro-Melancholy. The oil age in the mirror of art
Film and discussion in the series "On life in the Anthropocene"
Thursday, 22/05/2025 / 07:30 PM / Catholic Academy of the Archdiocese of Freiburg
On Thursday, May 22 at 7.30 pm, Berlin director Mathias Frick will be a guest at the Katholische Akademie Freiburg, Wintererstr. 1. He will show his film Petro-Melancholie and then talk about it with the audience.
The film embarks on an artistic search for traces of the age of oil. No other substance has shaped the 20th and early 21st centuries as much as the so-called "black gold". Oil not only fueled machines, but also the fantasies, desires and dreams of entire societies. Using works of art from different eras and regions, Frick makes visible how deeply our world is interwoven with the cycles of oil. The gaze of contemporary artists relentlessly shows us the ambivalence of this relationship.
The event in the series "On Life in the Anthropocene" is organized in collaboration with the Günther Anders Research Centre, the Studium Generale of the University campus Freiburg and Theater Freiburg.
