A deconstruction of musical heritage

Ensemble Recherche and the SWR Experimentalstudio are 80 years old together. Both have been shaping contemporary music from Freiburg for decades and have accumulated a wealth of experience and material. But as L.P. Hartley once wrote? "The past is a foreign country. They do things differently there." The Ensemble Recherche's own creation and writing of history also raises questions about the significance and potential burden of its own heritage.

The ensemble and the Experimental Studio address these questions in the multimedia project "Performing the Archive". Significant historical pieces from their respective archives end up under the performative scanner. It does not deliver high-resolution digital copies, nor does it rant about how unnecessary history is. No, he also asks questions: Is it permissible to change a "masterpiece" in new music? Is this a provocation or an opportunity, a gimmick or speculation? Is it possible to update the music and thoughts of the past with today's values and norms? Students from the composition classes at the College of Music Freiburg and the Basel Music Academy will be at the metaphorical scanners. They are commissioned to fragment and reassemble works by Stockhausen, Boulez, Ferneyhough and Rihm - a working method that is otherwise more familiar in relation to much older music. But sometimes the foreign country is also here and now.
