The pavane, a circle dance originating from Italy, was all the rage at court in the 15th and 16th centuries. In the context of this concerto, the danced round dance also symbolizes the cyclical ups and downs of human existence. The "Siegfried Idyll" celebrates - improvising on a well-known lullaby of the time - the birth of a new life. In Fauré's Pavane, young people in the prime of their lives flirt while dancing and find each other. In the "Danse macabre", the Grim Reaper grins at the now aged man, who then finds eternal peace in the world beyond, in Fauré's Requiem.
