Online discussion: Europe after the election

Online discussion: Europe after the election

Free entry

On Friday, June 21 at 7:30 pm, correspondents from France, Italy, Austria and Poland will discuss the outcome of the election and the consequences of the election results for Europe in an online discussion in the "European Perspectives" series. Birgit Schönau, journalist, Rome, Natascha Strobl, Momentum Institute, Falter, SZ and others, Vienna, and Matthias Krupa, DIE ZEIT, Paris, will analyze the situation in France, Austria and Italy as experienced journalists and correspondents and relate it to the German situation. Bartosz T. Wieliński, Gazeta Wyborcza, Warsaw, will report on the generally positive developments in Poland.

The results of the elections to the European Parliament are now available. They do not show a uniform trend and in some cases differ considerably in the individual regions of Europe. Fortunately, the predicted Europe-wide strengthening of far-right and national-radical parties has not materialized to the extent that was feared. Nevertheless, the growing support for these parties, whose political narratives are based on Eurosceptic to anti-European motives, is worrying. Nationalists and Eurosceptics made gains in 21 EU countries. The Süddeutsche Zeitung, for example, summarizes: "The political balance in the EU is gradually shifting further to the right - nationalism with its many faces is steadily gaining ground."

The event is a cooperation between the Katholische Akademie Freiburg, the University campus Freiburg and the Centre Culturel Français Freiburg e.V..

The discussion will take place online. Participation is free of charge. Registration at www.katholische-akademie-freiburg.de
