Nik Smart: piano / Jordan Smart: bass clarinet - saxophone / Rob Turner: drums

Founded in 2012, Mammal Hands have deliberately forged a path away from the musical mainstream. Their special sound is the result of long improvised rehearsals in which all three musicians contribute equally to the creation process and always focus on a powerful group dynamic - without soloing or solos. This harmonious flow can be heard and felt. The works, so clear and enchanting in their quality, culminate in rousing live performances that are celebrated throughout Europe.
Mammal Hands are brothers Jordan Smart (bass clarinet and saxophone), pianist Nick Smart and new addition Rob Turner (ex-GoGo Penguin) on drums. The band is one of the most successful formations on the jazz scene. The British trio with the somewhat enigmatic name creates its very own, unmistakable sound by borrowing from many styles, such as minimal music or Indian ragas. Saxophone, piano and drums are the official instrumentation, but this is expanded very freely with electronics or Indian tablas.

The fifth album "Gift from the Trees" is a concept album dedicated to nature and our relationship with it. The recordings were made in a remote studio in the middle of raw nature; these impressions have clearly left their mark on the titles. Thus "Gift from the Trees" is an intuitive masterpiece by the trio and not a brainchild from a hermetically sealed studio - says jazz critic Georg Waß

MAMMAL HANDS - A highlight in the 2024 jazz festival program!

Opening act/support:
BOOM is a new project by Regensburg drummer Gerwin Eisenhauer (TRIO ELF), who has been performing as a duo with 19-year-old singer and rapper Layla Carter for a year now. Although the two come from completely different musical worlds, they have come together to experiment with styles such as jungle, drum'n'bass, techno, trap and house in a completely improvised context. The result is a highly danceable journey of two generations of musicians to the fringes of electronic and jazz, which takes on a different color on this night.
