Strings come together to form string trios, string sextets or octets, wind instruments form wind ensembles. Plucked instruments, i.e. mandolins, mandolins and guitars, do the same, for example in quartets analogous to string quartets with two mandolins, mandola (a tenor mandolin) and guitar. The literature for this instrumentation is rich, and ambitious ensembles expand their repertoire by adding compositions that are suitable for this.
Ensemble 77 is such a chamber music formation, consisting of nine instrumentalists, with a bass guitar added to the basic instrumentation of mandolins (four), mandolins (two) and guitars (two). It has been giving concerts for almost 50 years, although it has been constantly rejuvenated along the way, and the chairman of Gitarre-Freiburg, Matthias Kläger, is now also a member. However, it still aims to present a demanding and appealing repertoire, starting with the early Baroque and extending to very recent original compositions. Concerts and concert tours have taken the ensemble to Switzerland and Spain, but its creative focus is on southwest Germany. This year's repertoire ranges from the single-movement sonatas of Domenico Scarlatti to the early 20th century: from representatives of the national styles (Spain), the tradition of Scandinavian string literature, the mysterious sounds that could only be created around 1920 in Paris in the circle of Eric Satie to the very young, collaged compositional technique of Christopher Grafschmidt.
Free admission, booking recommended at info@gitarrenverein-freiburg.de.
