How is climate change altering the Black Forest? Journalist and author Bernward Janzing has been measuring and analyzing meteorological data for decades.
Global climate change is progressing and can hardly be overlooked in the Black Forest: Forest damage due to drought summers and storms, springs drying up and winters with little snow are having a serious impact on agriculture and forestry, on tourism and, last but not least, on people's everyday lives.
In his book "Protokoll des Klimawandels" (Climate Change Protocol), journalist and author Bernward Janzing shows how climate change has developed over the past decades. He has been running a private weather station for 45 years and now provides an impressive overview of the far-reaching changes to the climate in the Black Forest based on his own measurements.
What does the climate future of the Black Forest look like?
The Black Forest biosphere area describes it as a central task to "preserve the cultural landscape that has grown over centuries with its very own special features, with valuable habitats for people and nature, and to find a balance between natural cycles and use for regional value creation".
The city of Freiburg is also preparing for climate change, which has already become a reality in view of record temperatures, tropical nights, heavy rainfall and increasingly long periods of drought - even in Freiburg. For this reason, the administration has developed a new and comprehensive climate adaptation strategy over the last two years in order to be well prepared for the increasingly noticeable consequences.
