Katja Petrovskaya: The photo looked at me - reading and conversation with Per Leo

Book tickets

A picture hits a viewer and doesn't let her go. Since 2015, Katya Petrovskaya, an author born in Kyiv and now living in Berlin and Tbilisi, has been writing columns that search with great precision for a language to understand our present. How quickly and radically it can change is shown in brutal form by the Russian war of aggression on Ukraine. Das Foto schaute mich an (Suhrkamp, 2022) brings together short prose, biography, and contemporary history. Many, but by no means all, of the images in the volume focus on Ukraine. But Katja Petrowskaja is always concerned with the fleeting, the ephemeral, the fragile. (Deutschlandfunk)

The author is one of the most influential Ukrainian intellectuals and has received numerous awards for her debut, Perhaps Esther, which has been translated into over 30 languages. She talks to the writer and historian Per Leo about finding images and searching for words.
