No sooner had Bashar al-Assad fled Syria than the first political calls for the rapid return and deportation of refugees to Syria began to be heard. On January 5, 2025, Federal Minister of the Interior Nancy Faeser presented the German government's so-called four-point plan for dealing with the changes in Syria. Protection should be reviewed and revoked by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) "if people no longer need this protection in Germany because the situation in Syria has stabilized," Faeser told the newspapers of the Funke media group. This would then apply to those who have no right of residence for other reasons such as work or education and who do not voluntarily return to Syria," added the Interior Minister, according to tagesschau.de. In addition, well-integrated people who work and speak German will be offered the prospect of staying, support for the federal government's voluntary return program will be expanded and the deportation of "criminals and Islamists" will be accelerated "as soon as the situation in Syria allows it."
These announcements and the political demands, some of which go much further, have led to great uncertainty and a high demand for advice.
The speakers will get to the bottom of the legal and practical issues and explain what to make of these announcements and demands.
