J. S. Bach's St. John Passion 1725 - music of suffering and passion

One week before the concerts of the Freiburg Bach Choir and Orchestra in the Konzerthaus (concert hall) and Freiburg Minster, a conference in the "Time for Music" series is dedicated to an "unknown acquaintance": Johann Sebastian Bach's St. John Passion (BWV 245) in its second version with the opening chorale "O Mensch, bewein dein Sünde groß". On the 300th anniversary of this work, the conference will shed light on the emotional, rational and spiritual dimensions of Bach's music from various perspectives - theological and musical, biographical and liturgical, practical performance and biblical hermeneutics. The question of why Bach handed down his St. Matthew Passion in a monumental "final version" will also be discussed, while the St. John Passion remained a fascinating "work in progress", which he revised several times during his entire Leipzig tenure.

The conference will take place on Friday, March 21 from 7 to 9.30 pm at the Collegium Borromaeum, Schoferstraße 1, Freiburg, and on Saturday, March 22 from 9.30 am to 5 pm at the Katholische Akademie, Wintererstraße 1, Freiburg.

The Catholic Academy is organizing the conference in cooperation with the Freiburger Bachchor e. V. and the Office for Church Music of the Archdiocese of Freiburg.

Admission is €40, reduced €20 and free up to the age of 27. Registration at www.katholische-akademie-freiburg.de
