Ivan Bunin: An unknown friend

A whole life seems to be condensed in the epistolary novel in miniature EIN UNBEKANNTER FREUND, a touching love story from the pen of the now almost forgotten Russian writer Ivan Bunin (1879-1953). A middle-aged woman, deeply troubled after reading a literary work, recognizes herself as a character in this text and tries to get in touch with the author by letter, tenderly, melancholically and trustingly exposing her innermost feelings to him. She, a mother of three and married, is convinced that she has finally found the great love of her life... But Bunin's text is actually about much more: about the power of art and the literary imagination, about existential loneliness and the search for meaning in life, perhaps even about the fate of the author himself, who was driven into exile after the October Revolution.
