Dieterich Buxtehude: Excerpts from "Membra Jesu nostri" (I-III, VII)
Carolin Shaw: "To the hands"
Johann Sebastian Bach: "From the depths" BWV 131
"Into your hands I commend my spirit" - these last words of Jesus Christ on the cross can be seen as the culmination of Lent. In the Freiburg Chamber Choir's spring concert, this penitential time is part of an enriching dialog between past and present.
The concert begins with excerpts from Dieterich Buxtehude's impressive cantata "Membra Jesu Nostri", which touches the listener with its deep spirituality and emotional intensity. The work musically examines the "most sacred limbs of our suffering Jesus". The American composer Carolin Shaw makes direct reference to the third movement "To the hands": "To the hands" meditates on the meanings that a hand can have as a symbol. Composed in 2016, the work quickly focuses on the then and now topical subject of flight and expands on the ideas of Lent in a contemporary and Christianly logical way.
In addition to the short composition "From the Visions of Hildegard von Bingen" for solo soprano by Sofia Gubaidulina, another highlight will conclude the evening: Johann Sebastian Bach's cantata "Aus der Tiefen rufe ich, Herr, zu dir" BWV 131, which, like Buxtehude's work, will be performed on baroque instruments, aptly summarizes the multi-layered thoughts of the evening with the words of Psalm 130.
The Freiburg Chamber Choir will perform together with the Freiburg Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Lukas Grimm. Anne Schneider (soprano), Luis Denzel (tenor) and Benedikt Heisinger (bass) will enrich the evening. Be inspired by the unique combination of baroque and contemporary music!
