Iakwe or how the rainbow came out of the cellar

Book tickets

Almost exactly on the other side of the globe is a small country consisting of over 1,000 islands and atolls: the Marshall Islands. Numerous art and everyday objects were brought to Germany from there around 120 years ago. Many of them are now in the Museum Natur und Mensch (Natural History Museum) in Freiburg. Who do these objects belong to? How were they used? What stories are hidden in them and who can tell them? Together with an actress, young people aged 10 and over embark on a journey through their shared colonial past in an exchange with Marshallese people. This journey gives rise to questions, wishes and dreams that find expression in new, self-created objects. Together with documentary film and drawing material, they transform the workroom into a cabinet of curiosities. In it, the children tell the stories of their personal journey accompanied by live music. In terms of content, the play ties in with our production MEIN OPA AUF DEN MARSHALL-INSELN from the 2023/24 season. And by the way: IAKWE means "hello", "love" or "goodbye" in Marshallese, or literally translated: "You are beautiful like the rainbow."
