Haus zum Herzog - Medieval deep cellars and baroque splendor

The "Haus zum Herzog" is one of the oldest houses in Freiburg. A first stone house was built around 1140, of which the first floor with toilet is preserved. Later supplemented to one of the largest medieval town houses with medieval deep cellars and late Gothic spiral staircase. From 1708 the building served as the monastery courtyard of the Black Forest monastery of St. Blasien. The baroque abbot's apartment of the early 18th century is still preserved. In 1957, the city archive moved into the property.
